Manifestations of Cultures in Websites Design

In the paper written by Inhwa Kim and Jasna Kuljis entitled “Manifestations of Cultures in Websites Design,'' it explains the effects of cultures on web design between South Korea and the United Kingdom '' charity websites. Over the years, the use of the internet has increased and it has become the main source to communicate around the world. They say that it is difficult to define culture and what it truly meanings because many people have their own opinion. South Korea and the United Kingdom were chosen because they both were different in culture according to Hofstede’s model that includes four dimensions that are: power distance, individualism vs. collectivism, masculinity vs. femininity, and uncertainty avoidance. It is stated that the4 colours, symbols, and layout already make a difference in the web page design. However, the use of the internet is used for different reasons in different countries, for example, some may use it for research or some may use it for their hobbies. In the study, Kim and Kuljis conducted where they examined 40 charity websites from both countries, which were 20 websites from each country. The results from their examination were that both sets of sites had the same information, press release, fundraising, and laws. The only difference was that South Korea had more liberal use of sound, video, and animation and the United Kingdom had more individual freedom and decision-making.
